We brought gifts to the orphaned children on Christmas Day 2022 to brighten the children’s holiday. There were treats of chocolates and cookies with some coloring books and crayons. We met with Father Huy whose been volunteering his fulltime time at Mai Am Mai Tam since 2019 with the help of a few Nuns and volunteers who educates and cook meals for the 75 children who reside there. The children’s ages range from newborns to teenagers. The orphanage provides care for orphaned children and single mothers who are infected with HIV receiving daily care at Mai Am Mai Tam. Mai Am Mai Tam is made up of two tri-level homes on the same street which were donated to the orphanage in Thu Duc, Vietnam. The living quarters are divided between babies, toddlers, and young children with pre-teen girls separated from teenage boys. The orphanage provides treatment for different stages of HIV illness and end of life care for the children and single mothers. There is an infirmary for children or mothers who are sick to be quarantine from the main population. Everyday, the children and single mothers receive medications to suppress their HIV symptoms to live a normal life.
Mai Am Mai Tam with the help of volunteers, teaches the children reading, writing, mathematics, sewing, cooking and other life skills to help transition the single mothers and young adult orphans to society. Once the young adults and single mothers are healthy with limited HIV symptoms and manageable daily medications, they are transitioned to another facility to teach them to be self sufficient contributing to the community with meaningful work. A few young children are lucky enough to be adopted by caring foster parents but most are ostracized from society due to their HIV life long symptoms.
